Hiatus

1CL is on hiatus for a while as I figure out what direction it will take.

Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas

If you celebrate Christmas, have a wonderful one.

If you don’t, enjoy the day off!

Happy 1st Birthday, 1CL!

One year ago today, my darling little blog was born.  My primary goal in starting One Conscious Life was to write on a regular basis, and I’ve met that goal.  I set my schedule to post three times per week, and over the last year I’ve only failed to post one time.  I feel pretty darn good about that.

I’ve learned a lot too…about creating and maintaining web sites, about blogging, about nutrition and personal finance.  I’m learning more about what I like to write about and the kinds of things that fire me up.  I’m trying not to be so critical of my effort and to put myself out there more.

Birthday CupcakesYou can’t celebrate an anniversary without looking back over the highlights of the previous period, can you?  Well, I aim to please.  Here are my favorite posts from my first year:

Change is Coming

I’ve decided to make a couple changes to my blog in 2013—nothing major, just little tweaks.

On my recipe index page, I’m going to take the cost per serving off the recipes from the previous year.  After a year the prices I paid are likely not relevant any more.  I’ll leave them on the original post though since those are dated.

And I’m going to do something different on “Refried Fridays.”  I haven’t decided what the change will be exactly, but it’s challenging to find enough posts on the same topic to have a decent link love post.  And it often leads me to link to some dated material—still good stuff, just dated.  (Although it does allow me to get things written well ahead of the scheduled posting date.)  So, we’ll see.

Thanks

I’d also like to thank my husband for all his support over the past year.  He always proofreads my Monday posts—even when I’m scrambling to finish on a Sunday night.  And he doesn’t complain about the time I dedicate to this, or about having to wait for dinner while I take pictures of it.  I am one grateful lady.

Refried Friday – Top 10 of 2011

Refried Friday is a regular feature of 1CL in which I share posts, articles, and other “stuff” I came across and think you might enjoy too.

I like Top 10 lists.  Any more than 10 items on a “top” list is too many, and fewer doesn’t seem adequate to cover any topic.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve allowed myself to get suckered into watching some countdown show just to see what the #1 thing on the list is.  I don’t know why I do it; I almost always disagree.  “That’s lame.”

If you haven’t had your fill of Top 10 lists yet, here are a few more to consider:

  • Scientific American published two top stories lists I appreciated:  Top Science Stories and Top Science Journal Retractions.  (Is it geeky that I subscribe to Scientific American’s blog?)
  • Andrew Winston at The Huffington Post wrote about the Top 10 Green Business Stories of the year.
  • Looking for something to read?  Check out The New York Times’ list of the Best Books of 2011.  Sadly, I haven’t read any of them myself.
  • I’m a big fan of EatingWell, but Top 50?!  Come on!  Once you start the slideshow, you can check the link to see the recipes as a list, and then you can just pick and choose what you might be interested in.  We’ve tried six of these.

Welcome to My Blog!

And my very first post!

I’ve been a writer as long as I can remember.  When I was a little girl (starting around age seven), I wrote short stories and letters.  In junior high and high school I wrote volumes of notes to my friends and line after line of bad angst-ridden poetry.  Then it was term papers and maybe a letter or two.  After college, I participated in writing groups from time to time, but I wrote more policies and contracts and carefully-crafted emails than anything else.

But you can’t call yourself a writer if you don’t write, can you?

So I decided to start blogging in the hopes that having a regular posting schedule and a theme to write about will be the impetus I need to reignite that passion.  Choosing blogging as an avenue for my writing appeals to me because it’s a social enterprise.  I’ve come to believe that everyone has an interesting story if you take the time to listen, and I hope that over time people will share their stories or allow me to share them here.

A Pragmatist’s Quest to Live a Values-Based Life

One Conscious Life (1CL) will be a blog about my quest to live a fulfilling, values-based life in a way that is personally sustainable.  It will document my efforts to reach my personal goals while raising productive citizens, being a loving wife, parent, friend and neighbor, being mindful of environmental and social issues, and serving my community….“living friendly.”

It’s about making conscious decisions about my health, my finances, my family, and my community and accepting personal responsibility for those decisions.

I believe that even small changes can have a positive impact and that a small improvement is better than no improvement.  I believe that doing things in moderation is the more pragmatic choice and certainly more sustainable over time.  Still, I always wonder if I could be doing more, if I’m fulfilling my obligations to my family, my community, the world…and myself.

The topics about which I’ll post will include frugal living, healthy eating/cooking, personal finance, eco-friendly living, and being of service.

You may be thinking, “Kelly, there are already thousands of blogs on each of those topics.”  I know!  I read quite a few of them (and each week I plan to share with you some of the posts I found particularly interesting).

I’m not an expert in any of those areas.  They are topics near and dear to my heart, things I’m passionate about.  1CL is just one woman’s story.  When you read it, I hope you will find useful information, things to think about, and a few minutes of entertainment.

And I hope that you will feel inspired to share a little bit about your story too….because everyone’s story is interesting.
